How to get the most out of your top-performing blog posts
If you’ve maintained your website for more than 6 months, and if you’ve been keeping track of how your blog articles and web pages are performing, you’ve probably realized by now that there are a few standouts — articles that far out-performed the others in terms of hits, conversions, shares, etc.
Who knows why? Maybe the stars aligned on those days and you thought up the perfect combination: a captivating content with a hooky title and headline. Well, the first thing you want to do take a closer look at that content. What did you do right? And how can you do more of it?
But second, you want to make sure you recycle your blog content by re-featuring those hit articles! If they performed well once, they’re likely to continue to perform well, and THAT’s the kind of content you want people to see upon first visiting your website.
So, here are a few ways to make your best blog articles work even hard for you:
1. Use a popular or featured post widget
Whether you let the widget work its own arithmetic or you populate it manually with articles of your choosing, it’s a good idea to give new visitors to your website a starting point. Featuring your best content in this way gives them, without explicitly saying it, clear directions: “Check out these articles first.”
2. Make your more recent top-performing articles “sticky”
Basically, this means you’re sticking that particular article to the top of your blog’s homepage. You don’t want an article that’s a year old to be at the very top of your blog feed. But readers generally understand when they see a featured or sticky article at the top that it’s the most popular or newsworthy item from the last few weeks or months.
3. Recycle your popular content
Don’t be afraid to write new, updated versions of articles that have performed well in the past.
You can also re-feature older content by linking to it from newer articles. There are lots of ways to do this: “Top 5 Articles on (Some Subject),” “Best of My Blog, 2012,” etc.
